Upper Mustang Trek

Mustang is one of Nepal’s 77 districts. It is situated in the north-west aspect of Nepal. The word” Mustang” in the Tibetan language refers to the” fertile soil”. It has been opened for tourists only after 1992. However, the place is still limited and a very limited number of overseas tourist trips there. The folks residing here are largely influenced by Tibetan culture and customs. People of the area practice customs and Tibetan culture and the majority of them talk the language. 

The last Bista king of Upper Mustang was Raja Jigme Dorje Palabar Bista. After Nepal was declared that a republican nation, the Government of Nepal no longer gave him (Raja Jigme Dorje Palabar Bista) the recognition of king. All the allowances he was getting in the Nepal government was cut off. In accordance with the new constitution, he’s no longer the king of Upper Mustang. They give royal respect to him.

Due to the remoteness of this region, the people of this area (Mustangi) Upper Mustang Trekking are compelled to practice all of the conventional tools and techniques of life. They use donkeys and horses as a mode to transfer goods from one area to another.

Just a restricted number of tourists are allowed to travel to this region. This region has been restricted to preserve its culture and customs. With a view to preserving the culture of the area the then His Majesty of Government had enjoyed this area as a restricted area. Nepal Government charges 500 US$ per individual as permit fee, for 10 days trip to this limited area. A few years ago, the permit fee to go into this area was higher than it currently is. 

After knowing the importance of this region for tourism goal Nepal government reduced the entry fee from 700 US$ into 500 US$. These days the Upper mustang region has been opened for the outside world for hiking and bicycle tours and jeep tours. But the tourists can’t travel independently within this area. They need to travel through the registered trekking service. Mustang area used to be the trade route to Tibet in the earlier days.


The Upper Mustang region has a very beautiful landscape. It is among the most beautiful places ion the world. We can see enormous red rocks formations. The Lo-kingdom lies in Nepal’s remote Mustang area. Mustang area is also known as the chilly desert of Nepal. The trendy and sandy wind blows in this area during the summertime.

Kagbeni village is located in the valley of Kaligandaki river. This village separates the Upper mustang area with the reduced Mustang area. Its the point of this area.

Tiji festival is among the greatest festival of the Upper Mustang region. This festival is celebrated to mark the beginning of a new year. It is celebrated for three days. The dates of this festival are fixed by the monks employing the Tibetan calendar. This festival is celebrated to chase away the evil spirits and attract joy and prosperity into the kingdom. There is a huge gathering of monks and people of Mustang with this auspicious occasion that is held yearly. Numerous dances, acts, religious events, festivals, and rituals are held during the provincial festival of Tiji.

The historic myth concerning the Tiji begins with a deity called Dorje Jono. He'd struggled with his demon father to save the kingdom of the mustang. The demon creates the water shortage in the kingdom affecting the lives of the folks in this dry and barren land. Dorje Jono defeats his demon father and brings prosperity to the land. This rare and untouched tradition and culture of the people of Mustang is a gorgeous and unforgettable sight to observe.
